
In Drawing From Memory, the illustrations depict real events that happenened in Allen Say’s life and that makes the story more relatable for the reader. The illustrations in Drawing From Memory and The Babysitters Club complement the story well to really enhance the meaning of the text. How does this compare or contrast to the life of a 12 year old American boy? The young boy was given his own apartment at the age of 12. Their is the topic of parenting in Drawing from Memory. In the classroom these would be great discussion topics to learn about Asian culture. This made me feel like I could see Tokyo through his eyes and it was real.Įach of the the stories have cultural aspects that are very important to the selection. The illustrations showed you what he saw in great detail. In one part of the selection the narrator took a trip to Tokyo and talked about what he saw and his reaction to the experience. As I read the selection, Drawing from Memory I saw how many of the illustrations were paired with the text.

In one part of the story the Monkey King was trying disprove Tze-yo-tzuh by showing him that he can go beyond his reach only to find out that he was wrong. There is some humor in the story American Born Chinese and the illustrations add a sense of humor on its own. In American Born Chinese there are parts in the story where the illustrations tell the story and create differents moods. In each of the the stories the illustrations provide extra meaning to aid the reader. The illustrations enhance the stories American Born Chinese and Drawing From Memory. Teachers are producing more literate readers when we incorporate these type of novels and books into our classroom learning environment. Graphic novels are allow students to read a piece of classic literature, that they may find hard relate to, but present in a graphic novel they may find it more enjoyable and easier to understand. Students can have opportunities to read a narrative and then respond through graphic art or a cartoon illustration. Teachers are also allowed to tap into their artistic students who many not enjoy reading however this allows you to marry together art and reading.

It is building a necessary form of literacy skills alone by telling a story using pictures. There are numerous benefits for the students when teachers incorporate graphic novels in the classroom. The illustrations in this book would switch from actual photographs to sketches and then back to cartoonish pictures or comics as he told his life story of evolving into an artist. In Drawing From Memory by Alley Say, the illustrations are autobiographical because he telling of his life and the challenges he faced in becoming an artist/comic though his dad and grandmother were not supportive.
